Saturday Academy’s mission is to engage curious young people through hands-on, in-depth and exploratory learning, connecting them with community experts as instructors and mentors. The SA2U Program brings our classes to your school or organization. Through our school-and community-based program, SA2U (Saturday Academy to You), students in grades 2 through 8 can explore a multitude of topics ranging from science, computer technology, engineering and math, to humanities and the arts. Our instructors are experts in their fields and/ r master teachers whose expertise and experience give students an opportunity to learn through hands-on discovery and to explore future career opportunities. There are no tests or grades given through Saturday Academy classes. The content for each class is designed to support students in developing skills and can be tailored to academic abilities.

ARTrithmetic

Description
Math is everywhere—even in works of art; masterpieces use mathematical concepts such as measurement, pattern, symmetry and balance. Students use their imaginations and creativity in a variety of artistic activities. They learn how to utilize measurements and shapes to create optical illusions and discover the secrets of M.C. Escher by making their own tessellating patterns. They also explore the magic of line design and how to turn perfectly straight lines into curves. $179 per student. Chemistry Experiments

Description
Ordinary household products enable students to begin to explore the fundamentals of chemistry. Using beakers, thermometers and test tubes, they compare the boiling point of different liquids. They learn about elements, compounds, atoms, molecules, chemical bonds and states of matter. Students experiment with mixtures and identify unknown ingredients by their properties and reactions. Students explore acid/base reactions and experiment with color, energy and states of matter. $170 per student Weds., Sept. 26 - Dec. 5 (no class 11/21 or 11/28) 2:45 - 4:15 PM

Digital Photograpy

Description
Digital Photography: Photography is a wonderful way to discover the world around us. Beginning students learn the basic controls on digital cameras and tips to enhance pictures using different functions such as ISO, aperture and shutter speed. They discuss composition, lighting and perspective and learn how to best capture an image regardless of the lighting or weather conditions. In addition to improving camera skills, students learn how to save, edit and print their photographs. At the end of the course, students are presented with some of the finished prints of their favorite images. $165 per student September 26 - November 14 3:10 - 4:40 PM

Engineering Rube Goldberg

Description
Engineering: Rube Goldberg: Entertainment merges with engineering as students over-engineer a contraption to perform a simple task. They gain hands-on engineering experience working in small teams to design and build quirky contraptions out of everyday materials to solve simple problems. Along the way, they learn about the physics of energy conservation, inertia, forces and electric circuits. Check out http://tinyurl.com/sarubegoldberg to see an incredible example of a Rube Goldberg machine designed and built by Honda. Price per student: $165. Puppets From Around the World

Description
Puppets From Around the World: Students build amazing, colorful puppets of their own design; creating whatever kind of creature they desire out of reused materials. They choose from three styles of puppetry from around the world—a Japanese Bunraku, which ranges in size from two-and-a-half to four-feet tall or more, a Chinese Rod puppet, made with true-to-life features and raised overhead at the top of a stick, or an Indonesian Shadow Puppet. Stop Motion Animation

Description
Students learn how to bring inanimate objects to life as they share ideas, create worlds and simulate motion using toys, cut-out puppets or any other object they can find. They explore how image sequencing, incremental movement and frame rate impact the smoothness of stop motion animation. This class gives students the tools they need to make their own animated movies using animation software.
